Sir David Mitchell

Sir David Mitchell was one of the founding members of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Society. He was a prominent builder and contractor in Melbourne, credited with constructing significant buildings such as Scots’ Church. Mitchell is perhaps more famously remembered as the father of Dame Nellie Melba, one of the world’s greatest opera singers.

Despite his influential role in establishing the Philharmonic Society, it is noted with some irony that Dame Nellie Melba never performed for the Society her father helped found, although she had at one time promised to do so.

Mitchell was part of a distinguished group of early Victorian colonists who were instrumental in Melbourne’s cultural and civic development, and his legacy continues through his daughter’s enduring fame and his role in Melbourne’s architectural and musical heritage
